Upper endoscopy can be used to take biopsy samples of the esophagus, stomach, or small intestine (to find out if an abnormal area is cancer, for example). This is done by passing long, thin instruments, such as small forceps (pincers), down through the middle of the endoscope to collect the samples. Endoscopic surgery may also be used to remove precancerous growths, called polyps. In endoscopic surgery, doctors remove a tumor or growth through a lighted tube called an endoscope, which goes through the mouth and into the stomach. With the help of recent endoscopic technology advances such as high-quality images and dyes, doctors can detect cancer at even earlier stages. The combination of experienced doctors and sophisticated technology advancements means people can get diagnosed — and treated — earlier.
Benefits of Endoscopy

Endoscopy allows your doctor to visually examine an organ without having to make a large incision. A screen in the operating room lets the doctor see exactly what the endoscope sees.

Endoscopy is typically used to :
  1. Help your doctor determine the cause of any abnormal symptoms you’re having remove a small sample of tissue, which can then be sent to a lab for further testing; this is called an endoscopic biopsy
  2. Help your doctor see inside the body during a surgical procedure, such as repairing a stomach ulcer, or removing gallstones or tumors
